Fashion & Design

At WEEDO the young women have the opportunity to develop skills in sewing and tailoring. Many of these girls become deeply passionate about sewing. These skills allowed the young women to be able to express themselves creatively through fashion. Because of this spark found among the students, WEEDO began creating garments and participating in fashion shows. The students can have roles in all aspects of fashion from modeling, designing, and sewing.

Not only does participating in fashion boost confidence, encourage creativity, and increase motivation to become experts in their craft, it also provides many opportunities for potential careers and networking. This exposes the young women to different industries where they have opportunities to become employed and ultimately self-reliant, supporting the overall objective of WEEDO.

The young women at WEEDO have participated in 2 national fashion shows, Swahili Fashion Week 2021 and 2022. They showcased their handmade garments on the runway worn by both students and professional models. This was an incredible opportunity for the young women and in the 2021 show WEEDO was awarded the Humanitarian Award.

TRASH FASHION SHOW

In 2023 the Sustainable Trash Fashion show in alliance with the Swedish Embassy was curated to bring awareness to environmental concerns in Tanzania. The abundant pollution among the areas has become devastating and WEEDO is taking action to combat it. There are 12 looks and 3 collections that encapsulates the mission of the Trash Fashion show. All of the garments will be made out of trash found native to the theme of the collections- beaches/oceans, local communities and tourism. For example, the Oceans collections looks are created from items such as fishing nets, bottle caps and sandals.
